Bex is a producer, writer, composer, and singer. Originally from Switzerland, Bex went to Boston where she majored in Electronic Production & Design and Songwriting at Berklee College of Music. After graduating, she made her way to Los Angeles where she began producing and writing with an array of independent artists like Klischée, Vo Williams, Gizzle, Jarina DeMarco, TIMMS, Beza, and Lily Williams. Her mission is always to enhance the artists’ vision and make it come to life in the production and arrangement, while always creating space for the voice to shine through.

Known in the sync world when her song Avalanche was used in the VR Shooter game Audica, in 2019, Bex worked on The Mayans M.C season 2, co-writing and co-producing music for the TV show. Most recently a song she co-wrote and produced with Beza (Belinda Huang) was placed in the TV show Riverdale.

Let's look back at the international career of Bex.

Rebecca Marti, also known in the music industry as Bex, was raised in Switzerland and has Swiss, German, and Nigerian roots. From an early age, she was inspired by her father's piano playing, her mother's singing and the vinyl records of Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. It has also always been her passion for movies that has made her explore the uncommon sounds of music: “Sister Act 2 made me wanna do music for life, and August Rush made wanna explore new and uncommon sounds in music” - she says.

Bex has been making music since she was in first grade. She taught herself to play the piano and started composing her own songs and making arrangements on her Casio keyboard when she was 12 years old. She took her passion one step further and transformed a barn into a music room, where she could explore and develop her own unique sound, singing, writing songs and playing the piano or drums.

She became active in the local music scene, for many years to come : She was a soloist and choir member of the Inspirational Singers gospel choir in Switzerland, a singer and pianist for wedding gigs and funerals, and a vocalist in multiple concerts in different genres. As a result of these experiences, Bex gained confidence and began exploring many genres of music.

“I always loved pop music and EDM. Though I love pretty much any genre and love to borrow from them. Growing up my parents had very different tastes. My dad loved country, Swiss folk music, blues and rock’n roll, while my mom loved Motown, R&B and Soul.“ -she says.

Bex attended the University of the Arts Zurich (2010-2013) and obtained her Bachelor of Music. During her time at the University of the Arts Zurich, she learnt a range of key elements that have helped her become the established international artist she is today. These elements include composition, arranging, theory, ear training, and performance. Through her studies, Bex has been able to develop her own unique sound and style. “It was the first time I learned about music theory. I especially loved anything regarding harmony. Also it opened my horizon and gave me a clearer picture of the music industry. It felt like I built my foundation there.”-she adds.

In 2014, Bex attended a week-long songwriting camp from Berklee College of Music, where she was able to showcase her talents and grab the attention of one of the teachers. This led to her being connected with another teacher, and eventually she auditioned for Berklee and received a scholarship towards her tuition. This opportunity allowed Bex to further her education and hone her skills to become the established international artist she is today. “Both Songwriting and Electronic Production & Design were crucial for my career. Firstly they opened my eyes to the possibilities in music. They made me flexible. They helped me build connections. Electronic Production & Design had an even bigger influence overall. I learned how to produce, mix, master and how to do post-production. It was extremely versatile. It helped me to wear many hats.”

After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Bex moved to Los Angeles and took part in charity work with her friend. Together, they wrote over 1000 personalized songs for sick children through Songs Of Love, a nonprofit organization. Bex remembers one particularly heartbreaking case of a girl with cancer who only had a couple of days to live, but was still able to receive the song before she passed away. This experience left a lasting impression on Marti and is a reminder of the power of music to bring joy and positivity to those in need. Bex’s dedication to this charity work is testament to her commitment to helping others and her passion for music.

Shortly after, Bex got a studio assistant job with Bob Thiele Jnr, the son of Bob Thiele, the co-writer of the iconic song “It's A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong, where she co-wrote and co-produced cues for the show The Mayans M.C. Season 2. Bex was able to work with Bob Thiele Jnr to create the music for this show and write her own pieces as well. This experience opened up a new world of opportunities for Marti and has allowed her to become the successful international producer and artist she is today.

From a musician's perspective, Bex loves the music scene in Los Angeles. She describes it as a place where it is easy to meet fellow musicians and get connected with the people she wants to work with. Everyone is connected, making it a vibrant and active music scene.

Bex has been the recipient of several awards and honors over the years. In 2014, she won the Underground Sun Dark Matter Remix Contest, and was the recipient of the Songwriting Award in 2017 and the Huang-Chen Scholarship in 2018. In 2019, she placed second in the Social Change Songwriting Contest at Berklee College of Music and was the winner of the Redstones Best Sound Design Award for the short film The Bartender. This film was featured in numerous festivals and movie theaters around the world.

Bex has also had several of her songs placed in sync. Her song "Last One Standing", interpreted by Beza was featured in the TV series Riverdale, while "Avalanche" was used in the VR shooter game Audica. Her song "Better From Here" interpreted by Nevis Black was featured in the movie Where Butterflies Don't Fly, and "Welcome To The Carnival" was used in the video game Identity V Halloween Promo. Her first sync experience was the placement of "Avalanche" in Audica, and she was also able to make a custom song for the movie Where Butterflies Don't Fly, which was used in the promo as well as the final scene. Bex's sync placements are just one more example of her success as an international artist.

Of all the aspects of music, Bex loves the collaboration the most. She enjoys the interactions with people and being able to bring someone's vision to life. She also finds producing and making music fun, as it is a way of expressing things beyond words. Through her collaborations and productions, Bex has been able to create emotions and make an impact on people with her music.
"I prefer to work with people because I don't just hear my own thoughts, and my judgment can get in the way when I'm by myself. Also, I have less ideas or points of view. It takes much more effort for me to do things alone. I'm way more motivated to work with people. I haven't been performing for a while, but I love it, not so much the singing because I get a bit too nervous haha, but performing is such a rush and I love that you have an immediate reaction. Working in the studio can be quite lonely if you're by yourself and you don't know if people like what you do or not. It's easier when you work with people, but still you don't have as much of a response; the reaction is a lot more delayed."

When asked about her current projects and how busy her schedule is, Bex answered, "I'm currently working on a song with Vo Williams and Kubla, which will be used for sync. The track is a cinematic trap/hip hop, and I'm quite excited about it. I'm also working with Premium Beat, and I'm finishing up a new set of songs for them. In addition, I'm recording and producing for various artists, so I'm quite busy." With such a packed schedule, it's no wonder that Rebecca Marti is an established international artist.
