After a remarkable two-decade break from the music industry, drummer-turned-artist Dave Bush—better known by his new moniker Skytinual—is set to make his long-awaited return to the spotlight with two new albums set for release through Peace Army Music. The first album, Yes Yes Let’s Hope, will debut in 2024, leading with the searing pop-polemic single ‘Still Love You (At the End of Time)’ earlier this year.
Skytinual, whose eclectic career includes performing with notable Grammy-winning artists and producing his own independent release before stepping away from music in the early 2000s, is excited to re-enter the industry. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in his early career, Skytinual recalls, “When I told Lisa Loeb that I was too busy to join her band even as ‘Stay’ was hitting #1 on the charts, that was the turning point. While crazy in retrospect, I was just getting interested in my music and knew I had to pursue my own path as an artist – wherever it took me.”
In his latest chapter as Skytinual, Bush reinvents himself with a fresh artistic identity. “‘Skytinual’ marks a new chapter – a reinvention of sorts,” he explains. “The sky is both ageless and continually changing. I relate to that paradox, and ‘Skytinual’ embodies that feeling for me.”
Skytinual’s new alt-pop single, ‘Changing Light’, explores themes of transience and change. Rooted in his long-standing zazen meditation practice, the song reflects on the fleeting nature of life, set against a backdrop of shifting light. Each verse, like a Zen koan, poses unanswerable questions—“are we coming, are we going, which is right?”—while the chorus repeats the mantra “changing light, changing life”.
On the creation of ‘Changing Light’, Skytinual shares, “With a dear friend and two family members engaged in major cancer battles, this year has really brought the fragility of life to the forefront. Stuck in Charlotte for 24 hours during the CrowdStrike outage, I wrote the lyrics in an hour or two outside a coffee shop. The song isn’t dark; it’s a meditation on change, an embrace of all possible futures”.
The song features Kevin Scott of Government Mule on bass, with Skytinual performing all other instruments, blending modern alt-pop with an ‘80s nostalgia. The release marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Skytinual, as he reclaims his space in the music industry with his signature mix of introspective lyrics and sonic innovation.
Skytinual’s return to music and the upcoming albums, Yes Yes Let’s Hope, and a second album to follow in 2025, promise to be a profound and thought-provoking journey. The alt-pop and indie-pop infused single ‘Changing Light’ is a great addition to Skytinual’s music discography.
ABOUT ARTIST:Skytinual is the artistic rebirth of Dave Bush, a seasoned drummer and independent artist who has played with Grammy-winning musicians and pursued his own creative path. After stepping away from the music industry for two decades, he returns with a bold new alt-pop sound, reflective of his life experiences and spiritual journey.
On this new musical journey, Skytinual shares, “In many ways, I’m a much different person now, and wanted a new artistic identity. ‘Skytinual’ marks a new chapter – a reinvention of sorts. The sky is both ageless and continually changing. I relate to that seeming paradox, and ‘Skytinual’ embodies that feeling to me.”
