Rising music artist Suki Summer, known for her evocative fusion of gritty rock and 80s synth, is back with her latest single, ‘Marianne’. This deeply personal track showcases her ability to create music that’s as bold as it is nostalgic. Diving into genres like indie pop, dream pop, and bedroom pop, Suki crafts immersive soundscapes that offer a fresh, unapologetic voice in today’s pop-rock scene.
‘Marianne’ is an intimate exploration of vulnerability and fleeting connections, drawing inspiration from Suki’s summer travels through Europe. Reflecting on a brief yet impactful romantic encounter, the song captures the exhilaration of a passionate but impermanent relationship.
“This song explores my relationship with intimacy and vulnerability,” shares Suki. “I wrote it after meeting someone during my travels. Our time together was beautiful and fun, but it was tinged with sadness, knowing it would end when the summer did. The name ‘Marianne’ comes from his favorite book, ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney. He compared my personality to Marianne in the story, even noting my resemblance to Daisy Edgar-Jones, who portrayed her in the TV adaptation. I used Marianne as a way to reflect on my longing and the impossibility of our worlds truly intersecting.”
The song’s structure is a journey in itself. The first verse reminisces about the joy of shared moments, while the second verse delves into the yearning for an alternate reality where their connection could have endured. The bittersweet lyrics are brought to life by Suki’s raw and melancholic vocal performance, a process she poured herself into for hours in the studio to maintain an authentic emotional thread.
“Recording this song was cathartic,” Suki explains. “My recording engineer, Neil, helped bring out the vulnerability in my performance. The layered harmonies and the music by Basil perfectly embody the duality of summer’s brightness and the sadness of its end.”
With ‘Marianne’, Suki Summer continues to build on her reputation as a storyteller who isn’t afraid to reveal the softer, vulnerable corners of herself. The track is an anthem for anyone who has experienced the beauty and heartbreak of a love that couldn’t last. “Despite the ending not being happy, I’m grateful for what we shared,” says Suki. “This song allowed me to explore a tender side of myself I wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Reflecting on the release, Suki Summer shares, “Sometimes you meet someone and it’s like being able to finally hold onto the side of the pool after treading water for so long…”
