Psychedelic trailblazers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced details of their 27th studio album, Phantom Island, set for release on 13th June via (p)doom records. The album’s lead single, Deadstick, is out now, accompanied by a visually chaotic video directed by Guy Tyzack.
Originally emerging from the same creative sessions as 2024’s Flight b741, Phantom Island took a more symphonic turn, incorporating strings, horns, and woodwinds into the band’s signature lysergic sound. Longtime frontman Stu Mackenzie credits conductor and arranger Chad Kelly—a classically trained keyboardist with a flair for microtonality—with bringing an orchestral vibrancy to the album. “The songs needed this other energy,” Mackenzie says. “Chad’s arrangements opened up whole new worlds.”
Thematically, the album explores inner space as much as outer, blending cosmic adventures with introspective reflection. “It’s more melancholy, more introverted,” says Mackenzie. “We’re still spinning wild tales, but with more emotional depth.”
The band will debut Phantom Island live as part of a special EU/UK orchestral tour this November, including a landmark performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall with the Covent Garden Sinfonia. The shows will feature reimagined tracks from across the Gizz catalogue alongside new material.
In classic genre-bending Gizzard fashion, the tour also includes alternating rave nights inspired by 2023’s The Silver Cord. These electronic-driven sets will see the band ditch guitars for modular synths, evolving their sound in real time.
Before the fall tour, the band embarks on a European Residency Tour this summer with multi-night runs in Lisbon, Barcelona, Vilnius, Athens, and Plovdiv, followed by a U.S. orchestral tour featuring a different 29-piece orchestra in each city.
Phantom Island continues King Gizzard’s reputation as one of the most unpredictable and prolific forces in modern music.
