The Sleepy Jackson

Arriving to a sold out King's Cross Scala, for the long awaited return of eccentric barmpot is Luke Steele with his band ‘The Sleepy Jackson'.

On a ‘what is to be believed' 4th band line up (only Malcolm Clark on drums is long standing), I was not sure whether I would ever have the pleasure of hearing a follow up to the psych pop harmonies of 2003's critically acclaimed ‘Lovers' but the new album 'Personality: One Was A Spider, One Was A Bird' is here to fill our souls once again.

Opening with current single ‘God Lead Your soul' and following it up with more new tracks, the crowd were quiet & attentive. ‘Good Dancers' & Vampire Racecourse' got the crowd more into the flow to appreciate the new stuff.

I couldn't help noticing that the sound was not great whether this is due to techie stuff or that the line up had not yet settled to playing live together as mad cap Luke Steele keeps hiring & firing band members for his masterpieces. Hopefully this is early days & they will hone their craft to a live audience.

Having said that, Luke Steele was in good spirits emotionally & entertaining but having played all the tunes, there was no encore. The crowd remained static for a while even though an irate techie was packing up the cables & telling everyone to fuck off home, “It's over”.

Not just yet, I'll be seeing you in the future, as the best is yet to come.
