Musician and composer Rock Choi is an outstanding lead guitarist who has been trailblazing internationally since the age of 19. The New York based musician, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, is prepping a world tour with music industry elites. We sat down with Rock to talk about his work with music supervisor Daniel Figueiredo on the movie ‘The Getback’.
Hey Rock! Tell us about your work in the movie ‘The Getback’. Recently, I got to work with the producer, Daniel Figueiredo. He is one of the most successful film composers in Brazil, who is also the Music Supervisor and Executive Producer of the film. He produced my original instrumental song called, “Blackbone Sand”. And the song became one of the soundtracks for the movie, “The Getback”. You can hear my screaming guitar sounds with an OctaFuzz pedal when it’s a gunshot scene.
What was the inspiration behind the project? I was writing a track for fun when I was practicing in my room after I received a new guitar called “Deluxe SS Baritone” that the NYC based guitar company, D’Angelico sent to me as a gift. It sounded so great and powerful when I played the baritone guitar for the first time. It has thicker strings than a standard electric guitar in general, the sound of the instrument itself was literally the inspiration for me. I immediately came up with the guitar riff and solo melodies (phrases) with that thicker string tone. Writing session was happening during the process of practicing very naturally.
Tell us about the process you went through? I liked the sound of the track, when I got to the point that the song was halfway done, I made a short video of me soloing with the D’Angelico baritone guitar with some effect pedals as in overdrive, and octafuzz. I uploaded it on Instagram. Daniel and I were following each other on Instagram. Jesus Molina connected us before by spreading compliments of my guitar playing to him, that was the beginning of the whole process. Daniel watched my video, and he reached out to me about the video that I posted and eventually the song got featured in the movie.
How did it feel to have your song included in the movie? Incredible! ‘Blackbone Sand’ is one of my songs that got featured in the movie for the first time. I’m happy that the sound of the baritone guitar that I play worked well with the movie scenes. Since this project, I am excited to release more songs and see how my songs can be used in movies or commercials! Looking forward to it!
Are there any producers you’d really love to work with for your music? A couple of years ago, I had a great experience of recording my original music with the producer, Joel Hamilton. I learned a lot when I recorded my music with him. I truly felt “The great producer could make the better music”. Also with the producer John Paterno, and Daniel Figueiredo. All these producers that I have met before, and it was a blast working with them. I would love to work with them again. And I would love to find more great producers who could help my music to become more amazing than before.
If you had one message to tell your younger self, what would it be and why? I would say “Do the exact same process” because I have done great so far. I have zero regrets in my life. Do what you gotta do. Keep being disciplined. You are going to be a rockstar anyways.
What can we see next from you? I’m headed out on a world tour in 2024 that I am super excited for. I can’t wait to see you at one of the stadiums!
How can we follow your journey? I am on
Instagram which has all fresh updates about my music career.
