THE Georgia Girl tour landed in Glasgow this week for yet another Scottish sold-out gig for Emo Country Queen Megan Moroney.
It has been 2 months since Moroney released her latest studio album, ‘Am I Okay’, on Columbia Records and it’s received nothing but rave reviews across the globe, so myself and a sea of Scottish country fans were ready to hear the track list live at the iconic Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom on Monday night.
Kicking off with support from Weston Loney who was incredible, his rich Irish indie meets rock tones were a hit with the crowd, I found myself adding tracks from his latest EP, We Get On, as soon as he came off stage - for fans of Sam Fender, Catfish and Picture This - check this man out.
Nodding to her 2023 release, Megan kicked off the show with ‘Lucky’ and the crowd went, no word of a lie, wild. The stage presence Moroney gives whether it’s an arena or an intimate venue is honestly electrifying.
The set list itself was a great mix of Megan’s previous releases whilst giving a live Scottish debut of tracks from ‘Am I Okay?’
Sporting a bedazzled acoustic guitar and a glittery dress of dreams, Moroney and her backing band (who rocked her very own Emo Cowgirl shirts - 10/10) played ‘Sleep On My Side’, ‘No Caller ID’, ‘Nothin Crazy’ and ‘I Know You’ before talking to the crowd about how her track ‘Noah’ off the new album came from a guy she’d met twice. That is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to country music, every song has a rich backstory and allows the fans to see an insight into the artist which Megan did with such grace to the crowd.
Megan threw it back into the early archives for ‘Wonder’ before belting out my favourite, Hair Salon. It’s one of those songs that no matter how you’re feeling, no matter the venue you’re in - you cannot help but sing along.
The love for Glasgow has made its way to America with the Georgia Girl singer admitting Glasgow was one of her favourite stops on the Lucky tour in 2023, and tonight at the Barrowlands showed her the same love she remembers from selling out local venue SWG3.
“I am proof that you’re never too late to achieve your dreams, I wrote my first song at 19 - I used to play songs to empty restaurants and now I have sold out Glasgow”.
Moroney has 3 studio albums to her name, but you truly would think it was double this with the amount of tracks she played that were chanted back by the crowd time and time again. Everything from Hope You’re Happy, a track about wishing someone from your past happiness, but reminiscing the breakup. Miss Universe saw Megan appear with a huge bunch of flowers giving ultimate prom queen realness to the stage followed by Traitor Joe, Indifferent - which sounded even better live than it does on the album - a lot more rockier and the crowd ate it up.
To close the show, the ultimate tearjerker - Girl in the Mirror “I wrote this song to myself to love me more than the boy, I was in a toxic relationship” I’ll admit, even I had a little cry at this live.
The track that catapulted Moroney into the spotlight, Tennessee Orange was the second last track before Am I Okay? Which rounded off one of the best intimate country gigs I’ve been to.
There’s no denying that if you attend a Megan Moroney show, you’re leaving feeling the best version of yourself because you’ve witnessed Emo Country gold live on stage. I think I left the show even more of a fan than I was entering it. What a stand-out show, come back to Glasgow soon Megan!
