Towa’s latest single ‘Rat Race’ starts in medias res, bursting into our ear drums with a gruelling guitar riff that is nothing short of electric. Her vocals are fire-rapid as she yells out the first verse with lyrics centred around the theme many of us can relate to which is working so hard to achieve stuff and never quite reaching this as you move back into the same vicious circle.

The lyrics reiterate this as she sings the ever-so catchy chorus “Oh, got me chasing my tail / Oh, with no wind in my sail / Oh, what's speed if it gets you nowhere? / What's free if you're trapped with no air? / Bang-bang and I'm off to the races”. I can only imagine the carnage that will unfold when this one is played live with punchy lyrics like this.

It is a song we can all resonate with, especially those like myself in Towa’s age bracket. Sometimes life feels like you work so hard and never see the payoff, which I what I believe Towa was trying to convey in this one.

Towa told Broadway World “You work tirelessly, pushing toward what seems like the finish line. But as you approach it, it moves slightly out of reach, keeping you perpetually in the race. There’s always more to achieve, more to do. This relentless machine doesn’t pause for you to look up and enjoy your victories. It offers just enough to keep you hooked, only to snatch it away, leaving you craving more” said Bird.

However, despite the heavy gruelling bass, this one really does feel like a fun track, especially when the masses will cling together to belt it out. This element of humour comes from the interpretation that Towa almost sounds like she is accepting this is how life sadly works, but with an element of rebellion as she defies to being caught in the rat race singing “Go f**k your stupid f**kin’ rat race”.

The bridge hammers as she sings “Running, I'm running, I'm running, I’m running, I'm running / And around, around, around, around, around” over this deep, husky bass and thrashing drums that summarising every bit of Towa’s whole genre.

After that debut album, and this single, she is absolutely one to watch because I believe she’s on path to some serious success, and nightmares of the rat race will be a distant memory for Towa Bird.
