Love me a good three piece rock band, and Red Giant are sounding like a very good one.

Formed by Dave Simpson, a You-tuber with over 135000 followers for his guitar tutorials and demos, along with John Joe Gaskin – Drums, Percussion and Carina Powell – Bass, Vocals, this is their debut album, and it kicks some serious ass.

Simpson is a fine, flexible guitarist with the ability to play a number of different styles, Powell’s bass is tuneful and strong while Gaskin’s drums have the explosive presence of a young Dave Grohl.

The combined talents of the three mean that they are not limited in style or content with tracks ranging from the dark and explosive ‘Friends’ to the indie sounding ‘Why?’ – their current single and a strong number espousing Dave’s painful journey through childhood trauma brought about by a failing education system that treats the victims of bullying as being solely responsible for their own suffering.

Previous single ‘Monsters’ gives another view of the band, with them sounding somewhere between Nirvana and Soundgarden and delivering another cracker.

I couldn’t find fault with anything the band do. They seem to be fine musicians and the songs have strong themes. Every track was at the very least ‘interesting’ and some are bloody fine.
I can see them as a fine live band and hopefully will get to see them sometime in the future.
