Joanne Shaw Taylor has matured. Her voice has developed and as a singer she is now properly expressive and there is clarity in her singing that wasn’t there at the beginning. Her guitar playing has also become more of an accompaniment and the whole package has, to these ears, moved into a more musical and Americana based style.

The song is a note to a lost love and there is a sad beauty to the tone, a fiddle adding to the sense of sardonic reflection. The song of someone who has been through relationships and is living with the detritus of the breakup.

It is one of the best things that Joanne has done lately, taken from her new album ‘Black & Gold’, and if this is her new sound, it is a winner.
