Kim Wilde was a female force to be reckoned with in the 80s, ticking all the boxes with looks, attitude, distinctive vocals and captivating charisma.

As well as being an 80s teenage pinup, Kim notched up 20 top 40 hits including eight top 10s, and was the most charted British female solo act of the decade, with timeless hits such as Chequered Love and You Keep Me Hanging On.

More than four decades since she burst onto the scene with Kids in America, Kim and her amazing band, including brother Ricky and niece Scarlett, are now lighting up venues across the UK on their Closer tour.

And it was evident that Kim’s star is still shining brightly with this show-stopping gig, bursting with old classics and some great new material, sprinkled with added sparkle and costume changes aplenty.

An emotional Kim told the audience: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for coming out tonight. This tour has really blown us away. Who’d have thought after 40-something years since it all started, we’re still having amazing fun together?!

“Thank you to everyone who bought a Kim Wilde record, amazing, thank you so much, because you put us here on the stage, and you have done for years. We love what we do and we only get to do it because of you.”

Opening for Kim at the Cambridge Corn Exchange were 80s masters of the power ballad, Cutting Crew, who got the audience on their feet in appreciation of their unforgettable musical contribution to that incredible decade.

Fans were treated to songs such as I’ve Been in Love Before and their number four UK hit, (I Just) Died in Your Arms, which always packs a punch with gig-goers.

Kim’s opener, Hey Mister Heartache, from 1988, got the show off the ground on a distinct late 80s soul vibe, quickly followed by You Came, which reached number three in the UK charts, followed by the powerful Never Trust a Stranger, all three songs released the very same year.

After the trip back to the 80s, the crowd were then treated to a string of fresh new material from Kim’s 15th studio album, Closer, released in January this year.

Stand-out songs included synth-infused Midnight Train, the hauntingly beautiful Lighthouse and glam rock psychedelic track, Rocket to the Moon.

A special moment of the night was Kim’s first ever duet with her talented niece, Scarlett Wilde, in another new song, Hourglass Human, with the duo rocking on down with the whole band, creating an electric atmosphere.

An integral ingredient to Kim’s popular shows is her brother Ricky, a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter, who’s been by his sister’s side throughout her incredible career. The magic of this new album is clearly due to this family affair, with Kim, Ricky and Scarlett, writing all the tracks on an album to be proud of.

Another showstopper of the setlist, Cambodia, really bought the audience back to 1981, as did her smash hit Kids in America, which propelled Kim to stardom that year and made for a rousing finale.

Looking ever glamorous in her customary rock chick ensemble, Kim’s stage outfits also saw her adorned in sparkling flowing robes, a diamonte peaked cap and a long taffeta skirt.

This stand-out show proves exactly what Kim told the audience – girls have the best time in their sixties! Fans of all ages left the venue feeling Closer to Kim and Wilde about the new album.
