A Wednesday night in Leeds with a sea of punters charging down to the First Direct Arena to watch a band who have paved their way, consistently improving and succeeding through the ever changing music industry – The Wombats.
As the band enter the stage, the crowd roar with cheers and adoration giving the Liverpool lads a warm Yorkshire welcome.
They kicked off their set with the single ‘Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come’ from their latest album, ‘Oh! The Ocean’. It is funky and groovy sending everyone swaying and up out of their seats to show the band the love they deserve.
We move through a few fans favourites including ‘Moving to New York’, ‘Cheetah Tongue’ and ‘Techno Fan’ all played with thorough professionalism and confidence, and sending the crowd wild as they belt out every line.
In a twist of fate, the band play an unexpected song of the night in the form of ‘1996’ which was voted for by bands on Instagram and the crowd mirrored the passion for this track as it was played out live.
Another special moment of the night was ‘Lethal Combination’ an acoustic cover by frontman Murph, encouraging fans to get involved and swaying torches from their phones. The view was a sea of light and joy.
‘Greek Tragedy’ was our final treat of the night, a brilliant song made even more perfect as balloons fall from the sky covering the entire room - it felt euphoric to experience in real time.
