Toronto’s trailblazers in music The Beaches, are now back with another single ‘Did I Say Too Much’ , which comes ahead of their third album which is due to be release in summer this year.

‘Did I Say Too Much’ starts with daydream-like opening riff, it is played at a standard pace but appears subtle easy intro. It feels like the opening sequence of a classic Rom-Com, and as the lyrics arrive this is evidence even further.

The drum is smashed against, signalling the starting of emotions outpouring within these lyrics. They’re sad but with this air of relatability. Each lyric reveals another chapter of the story and the words are so raw and honest it’s like reading someone’s deepest feelings found within a diary entry.

The lyrics are heartfelt and it presents this narrative known all too well in the Sapphic community around issues such as comp-het, fetishization, elements of queer-baiting and the male gaze which is reflected in the lyrics “Was our whole relationship / Just your boyfriend's kink?” It is sadly a tale as old as time within my community.

Vocally the tone become increasingly angry and frustrated which mirrors so well with the sombre and aggravated lyrics. Leandra’s songwriting from the soul really shows her sheer talent and professionalism in this track, and Jordan’s vocals are the cherry on top, conveying this story exactly how the writer would have dreamt.

For me, the absolute pinnacle of this single is the bridge. It is absolutely electric, it is one of those songs that you want to scream out in a sensation of complete release, but equally, you could also listen on repeat and get lost in.

‘Even in the break up, you can't make your mind up / Took the extra measure, gave me back my sweater / Soaked in your perfume / What the fuck is wrong with you?’ These run on sentences that sound relentless and are packed to the rafters with passion and emotion pouring out of each line.
