Single ‘For Forever’ is a vampire’s existential crisis, just right for the Halloween season.
If ever you have had occasion to wonder what a blood-thirsty immortal vampire thinks about between frightening the residents of Transylvania and trying to kill Buffy Summers, Edinburgh-based artist Alas de Liona may finally have the answer. It turns out that even those without a soul can manage a poetic phrase or two.
“My nightly drawings, my dear, they drain me, for I am frozen, in the darkness, for forever,” de Liona serenely croons.
‘For Forever’ is a confident concoction of 80s pop, rock thrust and gothic thrill.
The singer-songwriter brings out a vampiric vocal, leaning more toward angelic melancholy than dark threat.
The menace is instead left to the lyricism.
As our antagonist sings: “I’ve got a craving, a sweet engraving, oh you have plagued me, and so I’ll carve you, on a moonstone,” the listener cannot quite be sure if they are being invited to a love affair or a liquid lunch. Though our bet is on a light bite or two.
If this is sounding familiar, then congratulations on being a discerning music lover. ‘For Forever’ actually made its debut over a year ago. De Liona has taken the decision to use the scariest time of the year to relaunch the song into a fresh spotlight. Intriguingly, the musician revealed within the press notes for the single that she intends for it to form part of a project dedicated to vampires.
Although Alas does not reveal when this homage to the creatures of the night will see the light of day (presumably an overcast one to help the coffin dwellers out), ‘For Forever’ is a piece of intriguing fun for what might later emerge.
The singer-songwriter has provided a tempting morsel of a tune that avoids leaning into easy stereotypes. In fact, it holds a surprisingly bright energy and avoids sounding like something out of The Exorcist. Lyrically, we find our Count lost in the midst of existential ennui, as well as apparently plotting their next dinner date.
Overall, ‘For Forever’ is an enjoyable seasonal novelty tune, just right for those who like their vampire with a little bit of soul. A little less Spike and a little more Angel.
