At a sold-out gig featuring Brooklyn based duo Nate Amos and Rachel Brown, the cavernous Shoreditch venue pulsed with a diverse crowd. Among them, a swarm of style-savvy youngsters transforming Ramones-style skinny jeans from symbols of punk rebellion into something resembling PTA chic.
Amos and Brown were joined on stage by bassist Al Nardo and drummer Bailey Wollowitz, delivering an electrifying set, a frenzied fusion of gritty rock guitar riffs and pulsating electronic beats.
Brown’s unique, soulful vocals perfectly complemented Amos’s edgy guitar work and the retro 80s-inspired electronic textures, creating a sound that felt both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Brown shared how the band had previously played this venue as a support act and now returned as headliners, a testament to their rising trajectory.
The band’s chemistry is intuitive; Amos delivers flawless guitar work while Brown’s cool stage presence allows them to glide effortlessly from raw guitar-driven rock to sleek electronic pop. Dancing like no one is looking but if they did, they would be like, damn, who is that, how do I get to be like them.
The setlist was packed with crowd-pleasers like the grungy “Life Signs,” the shoegaze-tinged “Born 2” with its My Bloody Valentine vibe, and the kinetic energy of “Playing Classics.” The encore, “Track 5,” showcased the band’s genre-defying versatility and left the audience buzzing. This immersive performance proved that the band has the potential to soar to even greater heights.
Having attended their album launch Karaoke at Rough Trade back in August, I recall Brown saying that music had saved them, that without it, they didn’t know where they’d be now. (And yes, I did get up to sing at that karaoke, but I’ll spare you the details!)
Earlier this month, Amos took the stage at The Moth Club as This Is Lorelei, his solo project. He’s so prolific that, when recording a duet, his singing partner ended up being a pitched-up version of his own voice, “because there wasn’t anyone else around that day!”
If you get the chance to see this band live, don’t hesitate. Their show is euphoric, electrifying, and endlessly versatile, a phenomenal exhibition of sound and energy.
