Matthew Herbert has continued to push the boundaries of music as his career has developed over the past ten years or so. 'Plat du Jour’ his 2004 album was made entirely from samples of food packaging and kitchen utensils! Despite such quirky ideas he has still worked with artists such as Bjork, Moloko’s Roisin Murphy and REM.

Re-released off the back of Matthew’s latest album 'Scale’, 100lbs is a collection of tracks from his first three EP’s released way back in 1996. This is a retrospective 2 disc collection and the tracks do show their age. Jazzy house best describes the majority of the tracks, similar to the Parisian style of St Germain whose 'Boulevard’ album was released at around the same time.

Disc 2 contains the more experimental tracks filled with beeps, buzzes and strong basslines, but it is the final track 'trafalgar road’ that shines. A chilled out jazz piano and with a sultry female vocal (but only 1 min 30 secs!!)

If you’re not familiar with Herbert’s music I recommend you check out 'Scale’ before buying this, if you are already a fan then this is a good chance to catch up.
