Despite a stilted crowd of competition winners and industry types, New Young Pony Club, lead by the new young cool of Ty Bulmer, justified their growing reputation with, albeit a short but ultra tight hypno driving set. The four to the floor indie-disco grooves are simple to the ear yet beautifully formed. The songs are largely built around a solid metronomic hi-hat heavy backbeat, hovering synths and fat bass grooves and are delivered like Tom Tom Club, Visage, Grace Jones, and anything cool associated with indie synth disco. Ty leads the line with style - all flailing animated arms and arching back, perfectly at one with the beat. Commenting on the remarkable display of chandeliers on offer in the Bush Hall, "...like massive earings in the sky", they opened with Gonna Send All My Love. The crisp stylish sexiness that NYPC effortlessly put out was unwavering. The calypso vibe tune, prompting raised glasses, was screaming out for all to party (though it never quite got into full flow). Grey, from the new album gave an idea of how good it'll be expected to be on its release in May, while Ice Cream brought out the biggest nod of recognition (having been used in an advert and TV programme trailer). They saved the excellent The Get Go for the encore, and before you had time to come to terms with the end of the 30 minute set, the audience were ushered out of the hall, passed the bar, and out into the wet Shepherds Bush night air. My appetite whet too for more of what they called Nu-Rave, and more than just half an hour of the stylish and substance full New Young Pony Club.
