At only 18 years of age, half American and half Japanese Justin Nozuka, has sure created a buzz within the mature music industry. His voice is that of a husky and bluesy nature, whilst still having the ability to hit the high notes, containing real depth of emotion and soulfulness. As Justin takes to the stage, the atmosphere is thriving with rapturous applause.
Armed with an acoustic guitar, the shy and humble Justin delivers a pure, soul-reaching, heart-wrenching, but yet vibrant performance. Starting off the acoustic set is 'Be Back Soon’, which speaks of the depression and desperation of being separated from his partner. Although most of the songs are about love, there is a darker side to Justin’s song writing abilities, as illustrated by 'Down In A Cold Dirty Well’ and 'Save Him’. In 'Down In A Cold Dirty Well’, it speaks the feelings of isolation, helplessness and hopelessness, 'Dig me my grave cause I won’t be saved’. 'Save Him’ is the most disturbing song as it descriptively tells the story of a couple, happy in love, but it eventually leads to domestic abuse, which ends in murder. Also in the set, Nozuka performed his most popular and upbeat tracks, which was released as a double A side, 'After Tonight’ and 'Golden Train’. The encore consisted of Nozuka’s rendition of Otis Redding’s 'Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay’.
Throughout the intimate and mesmerising performance, it feels like you are transported to an underground New York Jazz/Blues Club. Witnessing the talents of an unknown young musician, knowing that Nozuka will become the next big thing to hit town. Although at times the songs may be of similar sounding, (as it is an acoustic set,) I reckon it would be worthwhile to check out his album as Justin did comment that some of his songs are more 'big band songs’. Hopefully, the next time I see him, he will be performing with the support of his backing band.
Look out for Justin Nozuka in 2007 as I am sure he will make a big splash. His debut album 'Holly’, which is named after his mother, is out now.
