Broken Social Scene celebrated founding member Kevin Drew’s new solo album Spirit if, with a choc-a-block show at the Scala in Kings Cross recently. Drew started off with a whinge about the pressure weighing down our generation, 'when you get out of bed there’s pressure, when you kiss your girl there’s pressure' then appealed to the audience to have a night sans pressure which everyone immediately agreed to.
The band played plenty of tracks from Drew’s new record and, while they were mostly brilliant - Safety Bricks, Lucky Ones and TBTF were standouts - they sounded suspiciously similar to the emotionally upbeat numbers BSS are known for, which really is no bad thing.
Drew’s charisma shined and his jokes sent chuckles through the sweaty - it was boiling in there - and cool, but not too cool for school, crowd. He was in a jubilant mood, probably down to the fact his birthday was the following day, and, in an attempt to reassure the audience that life isn’t all that shitty, he made us shout in unison 'it’s ok, it’s ok, it’s ok.' Once the band played Lover’s Spit, my absolute favourite from the BSS album You see it in people, I was ok - no I was fan-bloody-tastic.
