Peggy Sue and the Pirates lit up the Camden Barfly with an electric set to an enthralled audience. Clearly loving every minute on stage, the Brighton duo went through first single Television and myspace favourite Ballad of Superman as well as newly written tunes including Teeth and Escargot.
Different to most other duos, the two piece rely on a shared guitar, kazoo and their overwhelming vocal ability to battle yet also harmonise against each other to create a sound akin to nothing I’ve heard before. Combining elements of Kate Nash, The Noisettes, Nina Simone and The Specials, the duo make heartfelt and jolting music that is both funny and endearing.
Dockers MC, a spoken word artist captured the crowd with her support slot while O Lousy Tired Gal, playing her third ever gig, showed that the future of music is as diverse as ever and very much in good hands. While not likely to be mainstream artists, Dockers MC and O Lousy Tired Gal showed that musical inventiveness is still very much on the up and with Peggy Sue and the Pirates selling out the Camden Barfly, I don’t think it's too long before more people have heard of them and their music and carrying on the scene dominated by Lily Allen, Kate Nash and Jamie T.
