In the last few years a spawn of super groups have been climbing out of the woodwork. The most famous being Chris Cornell hooking up with members of Rage Against Machine to form Audioslave. Following not far behind is Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots teaming up with members of Gun N Roses pooling their talents to create rock outfit Velvet Revolver.
Tonight, the Hammersmith Apollo is hosting one of the most anticipated gigs of the year. Completely sold out, with tickets selling at around £120 on Ebay and a complete lack of touts hanging around outside the venue, you should count yourself lucky if you got to witness the first UK appearance of Velvet Revolver.
Considering these old time rockers have poured more JD down their necks not to mention the excess of narcotics they have indulged over the years, they still strutted about the stage as if they were in their hey day rocking out at the Whisky A Go-Go in LA. Slash impressed his audience with his trademark solos. It was a breath of fresh air to see the man back where he belongs instead of a Michael Jackson video!
Songs from Contraband rung out in their 80 minute debut, Sucker Train For Blues and Slither rocked the house, the forthcoming single Fall To Pieces showed off the bands more melodic softer side. Fans were even treated to Guns N Roses and Stone Temple Pilots songs eventually ending the evening's events with Nirvana track Negative Creep.
So who's next on the super group list? Of course we are still waiting for Axl Rose to surface with the new GnR line up. Who knows if that will ever happen, maybe now he's seeing the ex members of GnR hitting the big time again it might spur him on.
As for Velvet Revolver an impressive debut show, we await their return.
