31 July 2009 (gig)
19 August 2009
A cool Friday night in Como, just in front of the lakeshore, a free gig in a square surrounded by liberty style buildings. A power trio playing electric blues, leaded by Robben Ford as guitar wizard, Toss Panos on the drums and Travis Carlton on the bass (,I think someone knows his father).
The show start very fast, with Mr. Ford playing loud his Les Paul: the drum is dry, very clear and powerful, the bass is just a little underpowered, but providing a noticeable carpet to the songs (and we will learn during this night what can this young and talented bass player do, at full throttle).
Now the man takes his Telecaster , the band slows down, the sound become softer and jazzy, bringing back memories of Robben Ford’s collaboration with Miles Davis; the crowd is surrounded by a different groove and in the middle of this, Mr. Carlton starts his own performance, playing his bass louder , sustained only by a simple drum line, using different techniques and playing difficult scales faster and faster, till a true finger-picking 'fiesta’.
After this 'intermezzo’, the band resumes the rock 'n’ roll attitude, with some more guitar magic and fast drumming (with a perfect drum 'solo’ by Toss Panos), and then is over, but after the 'encore’, we had the feeling that Mr. Ford really enjoyed being here tonight.
Maybe you’ve heard about the automotive industry meltdown in the US, well, our Ford is in perfect shape!
