I take immense pleasure in exploring new venues and tonight was no exception. There was a decadent opulence on display with heavy dark red velvet curtains cascading onto the stage and a multitude of large golden antique clock faces covering the walls lending the long thin room an air of nobility. At the far end the slight figure of Emiliana Torrini took to the stage along with her two guitarists and proceeded to regale us with songs from her latest album ‘Fisherman's Woman'.
The acoustic guitars provided the perfect foundation on which Emiliana's delicately passionate voice could be served. Emotional and haunting songs followed one after the next. The half Icelandic half Italian 24-year-old song stress interspersed the set with quirky anecdotes and on-the-road stories in her chillingly romantic accent. The songs seem to come from the soul allowing her personality to shine through and touch the gathered audience. Personal highlights were the next single ‘Sunny Road', the albums opener ‘Nothing Brings Me Down' and the Ronnie Scott's story.
So as the lady that was responsible for penning Kylie's 2003 hit ‘Slow' left the stage a deserved cheer was offered and we crept back into the cold dark night with warmer hearts.
