Introducing himself with the line "My name's Beardyman and I normally do stuff like this..." the UK Beatboxer then added layer on layer of sound as he launched into a set crossing a multitude of musical genres from Hip Hop to Music Hall, from Classical to Bangra with a bit of Dub Step thrown in for good measure.
Tonights headliner stopped to make sure that everyone in the room was aware that he's "not a DJ" and every beat, swoosh and klang comes from his mouth before being twisted, mashed and manipulated through a bank of samplers and pads and then regurgetated out of the speakers in a blast of aural delight. Layers of looping beats and growling basslines fill the room and you would be forgiven if you thought you were listening one of the worlds best DJ's but then STOP... and our headliner will throw in a Drum and Bass pattern before telling us "It's just showing off really!"
Beardyman had the packed out Academy 2 in stitches putting together tracks based on suggestions posted to Facebook by the crowd. Tracks like 'Pancakes and Bubbles' in a DnB style. "It's pancake day... I don't like washing up". Some of his own tracks are hilarious too such as a Bangra song about well.. 'Nothing'
For the finale Beardyman joined forces with his warm up DJ JFB in a 'face off' as he mimicked whatever JFB could throw at him before they launched into frenetic DnB to close. But not before adding to the smiles with a few bars of Chas N Dave style piano!
Most entertaining gig I've been to in years
