This summer’s South Korean sensation, PSY, has achieved 1 billion views on his main YouTube channel (officialpsy) over the weekend, thanks to the phenomenal success of his global smash hit ‘Gangnam Style’.
PSY becomes the first K-Pop star to reach the milestone and has even beaten Nicki Minaj, Adele and One Direction to the 1 billion mark on YouTube, according to Starcount’s social media tracker.
While PSY is far from the 3 billion views that Justin Bieber has on his channel (JustinBieberVEVO) he is competing with the teenager for the most watched video on YouTube. PSY’s video has become the second most viewed video on YouTube, an astonishing achievement for a video released just four months ago.
‘Gangnam Style’ has reached an incredible 708 million views - getting to 700 million just this weekend - and is up against Bieber’s ‘Baby’ which has 798 million views. With the Korean rapper gaining almost 80 million views on his channel in the last week, it is only a matter of weeks until he overtakes ‘Baby’ as long as PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ keeps up the momentum.
PSY has been riding high on a huge wave of global success, even winning an MTV EMA award this weekend for Best Video, with model Heidi Klum performing the infamous horse dance. With rumours of a collaboration with Justin Bieber on the way, another YouTube viral video may be in the works for PSY.
