British singer James Blunt has said he wants to retire to Ireland because Irish people have music in their blood.

The star has finished a month-long UK tour in Dublin before he begins a string of gigs in the US.

Speaking after performing at the city's RDS venue, Blunt said: "Irish people have music in their blood. The audiences want to be part of it."

When asked on Dublin FM104 station if that he would consider retiring to Ireland, he replied: "Absolutely!"

Blunt, 33, also revealed that his first-ever proper tour was around Ireland about five years ago with a keyboard player.

"The reason we did it was because Ireland is a place that enjoys music. It was a very exciting time for me," he said.

Blunt became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when his hit You're Beautiful reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006.

The last British artist to do so was Elton John in 1997 with Candle In The Wind 1997.

Blunt has won two BRIT Awards and was nominated for five Grammy Awards in 2006.

He kicks off the US leg of his Lost Souls Tour in Seattle on Monday.
