American grunge band,
Mudhoney, should need no introduction. Formed in Seattle in 1988, the release of ‘Touch Me I'm Sick’ and the ‘Superfuzz Bigmuff’ EP on Sub Pop inspired a generation. This dirty, high distortion sound would characterize grunge; the sound that dominated the early 90's producing bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth and Soundgarden to a world wide audience.
After a 20 year absence from Edinburgh, Mudhoney return on October 9th to take the HMV Picturehouse on Lothian Road by storm. Not only will this massive cult act play, but they will be accompanied by fellow grunge-rockers
The Vaselines.
Formed in 1986, The Vaselines are an Indie Pop band from Scotland. The band released 2 EP's, ‘Son Of A Gun’ and ‘Dying For It’, and the album ‘Dum-Dum’ before splitting in 1989. In 1990 Kurt Cobain asked them to reform as support for Nirvana's upcoming gig in Edinburgh. The Vaselines reformed in 2008 for Tigerfest, with members of Belle and Sebastian completing the line-up. Since then they have gone on to play their first concerts in America and their first visit of London in 20 years.
Support for the two legendry acts comes in the form of
St. Deluxe, another band who may be on the left of the mainstream, but with the new love of indie have every chance of breaking through. Mixing howling guitars and My Bloody Valentine-style vocals with the harmonies of Teenage Fanclub, the band, who are led by BMX Bandits regulars Jamie Cameron and Martin Kirwan, are already doing well in Germany.
