Jealous is a heart-breaking ballad, sung with devastating effect by Labrinth, that is addressed to the parent who left his family when the man born Timothy McKenzie was only four.
“A lot of people have been through that experience. It’s kind of written from the perspective of how my family felt at the time, but I wanted to write it so anyone could dig into the song and relate to it to their own situation,” explains Labrinth.
The song has struck a chord with many on the first listen. Q magazine said Jealous is “a stark weepy that could be the most emotively soulful ballad since Adele’s Someone Like You.”
Labrinth wrote Jealous with Josh Kear and Natalie Hemby during a writing trip to Nashville. He opted to spend time in the home of country music, “because I wanted to learn how to be a better songwriter,” he states matter-of-factly, “as well as being a good producer. It was a great trip to teach me how to upgrade my skill.”
Jealous and Let It Be are taken from Labrinth’s upcoming album, ‘Take Me To The Truth.’ The album has already been described as a ‘21st century sci-fi soul classic.’ He recently performed the lead single and a new song called Missbehavin’ on Later With Jools Holland. The two song set wowed the crowd and saw the super-talented musician open and close the BBC2 show.
‘Take Me To The Truth,’ which will be released in early 2015, has been two years in the making and see’s Labrinth grow into a confident singer and showman. Drawing influences from different genres and era’s, Labrinth has created an exceptional album. He takes control on every aspect of the making of the album; from writing, to performing, producing and mixing.
