Sam Smith "hated every moment" of his Academy Awards performance because he was so nervous.
The Stay With Me singer took to the stage to perform Oscar-winning song Writing's on the Wall, his theme song from James Bond movie Spectre, during the Los Angeles awards ceremony on Sunday (28Feb16), but he admits he did not enjoy the experience.
"That was honestly the worst moment of my life," he told BBC Breakfast. "Singing was horrible - I hated every moment of it. I was so nervous. That's the truth. I want to say to everyone at home, we love you."
He had previously told U.K. talk show host Graham Norton how difficult the track is to sing live because it is so high, and that he feared performing it.
He said on The Graham Norton Show ahead of his rendition, "I'm absolutely dreading it... I've only sang the song once really. I did the demo in the studio, and they used that. It is horrible to sing... It’s just so high. I have to grab my balls, it's awful."
The singer ended up having a night to celebrate though as he bagged the Oscar for Best Original Song with his co-writer Jimmy Napes. Sam told BBC Breakfast at the Vanity Fair afterparty he was not expecting to be victorious.
"I genuinely didn't think we were going to win at all," he adds. "We're in complete shock. The whole thing's just amazing."
He admits when he found out they had won he felt "overwhelmed, happy, insecure - all those things at the same time."
He dedicated his award to the members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in his acceptance speech. He said, "I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen that said that no openly gay man had ever owned an Oscar and if this is the case, even if it isn't the case, I wanna dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day."
However it wasn't all good news for Sam; screenwriter Dustin Lance Black took to Twitter.com not long after Sam's win to tell him to quit messaging his fiance, Olympic diver Tom Daley.
"Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiance," he posted.
Sam is yet to respond.
