Celebrating the release of their new studio album ‘Different Creatures’, indie rockers Circa Waves took to the Cambridge Junction for their final date of their sold out UK tour. Two years on from their debut release ‘Young Chasers’, the Liverpudlians lads have returned with a darker, heavier style, mirrored in their fierce but effortless performance.
The lights dimmed and the atmosphere was brimming with excitement. A red wash covered the stage and the quartet strolled on stage without a care in the world. By the first note of ‘Wake Up’ the crowd’s screams were deafening, mosh pits were forming and beer was flung into the air.
Fulfilling fan’s expectations, Circa Waves brought out the indie anthem, from ‘Get Away’ to ‘Lost It’, keeping the crowd in the palms of their hands. However the audience’s hysteria wasn’t matched by frontman Kieran Shudall, who stayed cool and collected throughout, breaking the indie band cliché. Shudall not only showed awareness of his audience but kept complete control of the band members, juggling his eye contact from the crowd to everyone on stage.
The crowd gain a deserved moment to catch their breath with ‘Out On My Own’, bringing the tone down. The mature sound proves the progression in the band’s style, demonstrating Shudall’s modulated vocals against powerfully emotional lyrics. Although that may not have been fully appreciated by the teenagers swaying with their lighters held proudly in the air, by the final note the Liverpudlian rockers look at each other with satisfactory smiles on their faces, before classic ‘Stuck In My Teeth’ caused the manic mosh pits all over again.
Again escaping the stereotype, Shudall returns for the encore alone, performing the acoustic ‘Love’s Run Out’. With just a spotlight projected onto him, isolated Shudall’s emotive lyrics were amplified, making the moving song even more heart breaking. You’re soon awoken with Radio 1’s favourite ‘Fire That Burns’ and ’T-Shirt Weather’, bringing the night to an unwanted end. Combining their indie anthems and new heavy rock songs, Circa Waves gave their fans the most uplifting and compelling gig - what a way to end the tour.
