Darlingside's remarkable new album 'Extralife' is the follow up to the band's European breakthrough debut release, the widely praised 'Birds Say', which led to a meteoric live success story in the UK. During three sold out tours, the band's unique performances brought instant adoring fans, tracing a rise from the unexpected 2016 mainstage performance at Cambridge Folk Festival through to the Summer of 2017 with a TV performance live from GLASTONBURY on BBC 2 TV and a triumphant, sold out London UNION CHAPEL show which garnered rave reviews.
The band will launch 'Extralife' in the UK at an intimate, sold out show on January 30th 2018 at London's Courtyard Theatre.
Where 'Birds Say' was steeped in childhood nostalgia and the loss of innocence, 'Extralife' finds Darlingside looking to the future with an almost post-apocalyptic view. They explore hard truths from societal issues and politics to environmental concerns and religious tensions as catalysts for the life to which we could potentially be destined. At the core of 'Extralife' the deepest questions remain: does anything we do matter or make a difference? Are we resigned to fate or are we able to change the future? While the subject matter may seem bleak, it is addressed with artistic beauty and grace and 'Extralife' is not without an underlying sense of hope and optimism.
Debut album 'Birds Say' marked the arrival of an eclectic, intelligent and dynamic band ("…exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop." -NPR Music). Darlingside stretched the boundaries of folk, chamber pop, baroque and indie rock by melding the various styles together and creating something not easily categorised and very much their own.
With 'Extralife', they continue to move forward. Pensive and poetic lyrics are delivered with divine harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys, Fleet Foxes and Simon & Garfunkel. Seamless vocals and masterful musicianship create an ambient, dreamlike atmosphere. In concert, Darlingside - Don Mitchell, Auyon Mukharji, Harris Paseltiner, and David Senft - is unique; the merging of their four voices into a single microphone and instrumental interplay is something to behold. Their undeniable charm and wit only endearing them further to anyone who sees them.
