Outside the Coronet lightning bolts were striking ominously across the sky and as we left the security of Adriano’s car the heavens opened .... great.

Inside it felt as if we’d crossed a tropical weather boundary, heat seemingly rising from the cinema seats and hanging clammily in the air. The protracted wait for Russell Brand to take the stage ended with hisses and boos ringing around the auditorium until bassist Didz finally put the bemused presenter out of his misery with a well timed rugby tackle.

Stubbing out his cigarette out Carl Bahrat wasted no time in leading his band mates headfirst into the sneering punk classic 'You Fucking Love It’. Instantly the temperature rocketed as Anthony, Carl, Didz and Gary started to put a multitude of deodorants to the DPT test.

Dressed in black trousers and a white top Carl looked every part the star having clearly recovered from the broken collarbone he picked up falling off a motorbike. Appropriately tonight’s gig was a benefit for the 'Make Roads Safe' campaign with a large screen informing the sweaty mass that every 3 minutes a child is killed on the road. A brief mention from Carl was all that was needed (don’t you just hate it when rock stars get all self-righteous on us?).

Most tracks from 'Waterloo To Anywhere' made an appearance as well and two new ones. The surpise appearance of Paul Weller was greeted with appropriate adulation as he strummed along to 'Gin And Milk’ and later returned to play the Jam classic 'In The City’ with Carl on vocals. Ending the set with the Libertines’ 'I Get Along’ the boys left the stage but not before Gary saluted the crowd in typically flamboyant fashion.

A majestic night of music from a past and future icon.
