The Rough Trade record store played host to an intimate gig for the unique Shy Child. We stood between the racks of CDs to listen to the band it is near impossible to pigeon hole into any particular genre – synthesised sounds that would not be out of place on a Prodigy track are mixed with happy-hardcore-esque melodies, yet there are definite dancehall influences running throughout. This is further confused by the punk like singing voice of Pete Cafarella, leading to an enjoyable yet slightly confused performance.

Pete and Nate rushed through their set in just over twenty-five minutes in front of a crowd as varied as their musical influences. They demonstrated some impressive skills on the keytar and drums, providing a remarkably solid sound for just two instuments.

The energy of performance was unfortunately not matched by the audience, the majority of whom seemed almost disinterested until the upcoming-single Summer. This acted as an uplifting finale, the crowd growing more animated with it’s chirpy backing.

Shy Child clearly offer an unexpected yet enjoyable experience, although they are possibly not going to offer the best of atmospheres until they have attracted a slightly larger following. Hopefully this will develop through their roles supporting other groups such as Muse and Hot Chip, creating the element definitely missing from this otherwise entertaining performance.
