The Reading 5 piece came onto a warm response from a young crowd who you sensed knew their music, people who had made the effort to see this 'up and coming’ band more than once. I just had a sneaky feeling that everyone in the Borderline, including myself, was going to enjoy this Levi's Ones To Watch show.
There is an energy about Pete & The Pirates that is apparent right from the off. It’s refreshing to see what I call a classic 5 piece, each member playing their part and performing with a confidence that is delivered with every song. I have never heard any of their songs before, and within the first few minutes that confidence made me realise I liked this band,a lot.
There is blend of sounds throughout the whole set. One minute you are banging your head and tapping your feet to the big beats, the next, the song has broken down to a 4 vocal bonanza. I would say the songs to seem a little short but it works, they are punchy, they get the message across and you don’t feel robbed of another verse or chorus. Don’t have them there just for the sake of it, and Pete & The Pirates don’t.
Talented, raw, honest, and refreshing, Pete & The Pirates are most definitely 'ones to watch’.
