Grand Master Flash is impressive . His legacy to hip hop is undoubted. His set and showmanship was excellent, pleasing the crowd with his skills on the decks. However, the people at Paper are not the typical crowd who would usually go to one of his gigs. The crowd is the typical west end night club crowd – lots of make-up, high heels, fashion conscious and also the wannabes. I suspect that Grand Master Flash is more used to jeans, trainers and t-shirts at his events. The crowd appreciate his efforts though, deservedly so. The fact that he can play to a range of different partygoers is testament to his skill and explains why he is so formidable.

Paper nightclub itself deserves a few comments. The door staff and promoters were excellent, they were polite and friendly, a bonus for a London club. Furthermore, the Alizé event seemed to be well organized with entertainers. The club itself just doesn’t feel right though. It is essentially a few basement rooms beneath the café royal. The rooms feel disjointed and there doesn’t feel like it has any flow or consistency compared to other similar clubs such as Movida and Kensington Roof Gardens. Its more of a bar than a high end luxury club.
