Down at the Borderline tonight are Red Light Company, fresh from the release of their debut album Fine Fascination.
Up first are Derby’s You Animals, a pop-punk band with a whole load of enthusiasm and raw talent. Infectious hooks and bags of energy make for a great warm-up act.
Grammatics, a talented four-piece band from Leeds, can only be described as an astounding band. Beautifully crafted songs, executed with such captivating detail, it delights; with layer-upon-layer of perfectly honed sound and an extraordinary choirboy vocal. An epic talent.
Red Light Company, hailing collectively from the UK, one via the land down under, swiftly pluck their bass player from Gatwick immigration officials, before he gets deported back to the US for not having enough cash. Luckily for us, they are here in their full glory tonight.
Red Light Company are Richard Frenneaux (vocals/guitar), Shawn Day (bass), James Griffiths (drums), Paul Mellon (guitar) and Chris Edmonds (keyboard)
Frenneaux’s Molko-esque voice, combined with anthemic sing-a-long choruses, contradict even the darkest of themes. First single, Scheme Eugene, is on early in the set; it’s about addiction and prostitution, you just can’t help but sing along to the catchy chorus.
Meccano is another highlight, about passing friendships and changing lives. Their dark lyrics, draw likings to Editors and Interpol. Frenneaux’s stage presence is intriguing; he stares at each and every member of the packed out Borderline, making you feel part of something awkwardly special.
Red Light Company are definite ones to watch for 2009, catch them in an intimate setting while you can.
