Edge Festival, as part of the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is in full swing now, with sets already from Calvin Harris and The Stranglers. Tonight, HMV Picturehouse invites to the stage 90s Britpop favourites
The Bluetones for a fun-filled journey into pop songs past, and an excellent set from a band who never did actually leave the spotlight.
Supporting the Bluetones are those loudly-energetic, tambourine-banging, delicately-fun kids from Falkirk, The Ray Summers. The Ray Summers hit a 60s sunshine-pop note perfectly, combining the musical stylings of The Kinks and The Rolling Stones with a modern Britpop from Oasis, Seahorses and Cast. The Ray Summers are a great opening act, thrusting energy and buzz into the audience for The Bluetones to approach.
The Bluetones are a playful act, with good humour to match their sweet pop numbers. Mark Morris announces on stage that this show will be a creative mirror of the past, from a band who hit their peak almost 13 years ago. However, for the audience, The Bluetones are a band that never left the limelight, and perform a set tonight as magically entertaining as the shows of yonder year.
The Bluetones play an array of old and new songs, with the majority of hits coming from album 'Expecting to Fly’ - a shameless plug to promote their new live DVD. The Bluetones saw massive success with singles 'Slight Return’ and 'Cut Some Rug’, which when performed tonight, provide the highlights of the set. The Bluetones have showcased music together as a band for nearly 15 years, and it’s evident from their audience’s enthusiasm that playing live like this is something they will never give up.
The great set from The Bluetones tonight is one of many gigs from Edinburgh’s Edge Festival. This year’s Edge Festival, will see a plethora of great names headlining: Biffy Clyro, Frightened Rabbit, The Streets, Broken Records, Amanda Palmer and Ian Brodie to name but a couple.
