The Noisettes played at Komedia last time they were in Brighton, now several commercials later they return to the Dome with a new dedicated bassist and backing vocalists which doesn’t help the allegations that they’ve sold out. If laying down for 'the man' means they can put on such an excellent show then sell all their songs for adverts.
As soon as the lights were dimmed at the start of the show, it was obvious this was going to be a fantastic set. The curtains in front of the stage were drawn back to reveal a half music video, half stage show set up with gold curtains, candle lamps and strobe lights with Shingai Shoniwa in her usual eccentric outfit, this time with a banana for a hat. In case anyone became bored with these bright and colourful outfits there were several costume changes throughout the show.
Shoniwa pranced around the stage more like a gymnast than a singer creating a unique performance and giving the show brilliant character. There were also some great covers including Heartache by the Killers which was an awful lot better than the original, and a medley of Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory into Don’t Upset the Rhythm. The latter had the entire crowd pulsating up and down together to the beat.
The guitarist treated us to a couple of solos played in true Hendrix style by using his teeth and we also heard new track Prisoner of Love. The backing vocalists were the best BVs I’ve heard! An odd statement but they were amazing singers and dancers: well synchronised with each other.
I left feeling enlightened; if I missed this show I surely would have missed out for the worst. This is definitely up in my top ten gigs.
