It was clear tonight that half the crowd were waiting for Elton John to turn up with their union album’s forthcoming release but I was waiting for the Leon Russell. Maybe he was having a off night but the searing vocals I remember listening to on the early LPs that gave Gregg Allman a good run for his money were sorely lacking from the beginning.

Opening with Delta Lady,Russell was a sure fire crowd pleaser and he also wasn't afraid to pay homage with covers from his good friends Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. Each and every one got the crowd going. He also kept them close like trusted friends with his own originals while seated at his electric piano shining in the spotlight like Jesus!

I don't know why Leon Russell isn't playing more dates in Europe but whatever the his short comings, Camden Town got a rare glimpse from a true son of South. Elton who some asked? He wasn’t missed by the end of night and daring enough to assemble a young band with teeth, Russell was paving the way for a new generation.
