Miller Filtered Music promised a night to see your favourite band, in an intimate setting doing something original, and on the first night of this ambitious project they certainly ticked all those boxes. Doves, who have 4 hit albums under their belt, swapped the usual huge venues for the smaller Oran Mor in Glasgow`s west end and played an unplugged-style set using an array of instruments which wouldn’t normally feature on their normal mass scale headline tours.
In the modern era where bands hide behind laptops, effects pedals and smoke and mirrors it`s certainly not every band who could pull off a 12 song set. The very thought of a stripped down set is enough to give some bands shudders and wake them up in the middle of a night in a cold sweat. This was happily not the case with Doves who effortlessly worked their magic from the very offset with opener `Snowden` setting the scene and hushing the bustling crowd. `Sea Song` was to follow, a beautiful sweeping classic, that somehow sounded more powerful than the original with all its `bells and whistles` as lead singer Jim Goodwin called it.
The band seemed to genuinely enjoy this platform and the crowd lapped up this rare opportunity to see one of their favourite acts playing in a different style from one their accustomed. Not that this was ever in danger of turning into an avant garde evening of rare b-sides. Far from it as Doves played the majority of the hits that made them such a huge act in the first place. They just played them from the heart in a unique style. Songs such as `Black and White Town` , `Cedar Room` and `There Goes The Fear` all making the cut and all and sounding epic as the crowd wistfully sung a long.
The set was completed with a 3 song encore, the grand finale of which `Kingdom of Rust` from their latest album concluded to a rapturous applause. The night was a huge success for Miller Filtered Music proving the old adage `less is sometimes more` and I for one cant wait to find out what artists they have in store for their upcoming nights.
