UK chanteuse Joss Stone is one of the best talents to have come along in the past decade. Possessing a powerhouse of a voice, while being as smooth and soulful that makes her on par with the some of the great STAX artists.
Stone, in the midst of a short US tour, made an appearance on October 15, 2012 at the House of Blues in Boston, MA.
Why Stone has not become a major star in US is a mystery. She possesses the vocal chords, talent, and the charisma, so it is most likely just a matter of time before she reaches the same level of stardom in the States that she has found internationally.
Always proud of her appreciation of soul and R&B tunes, Stone opened with covers of the Chi-Lites “(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People” and The Honey Cones’ “While You're Out Looking for Sugar” before lunging into her hit, "You Had Me." By this point, Stone already had the nearly filled House of Blues in the palm of her hand, and she took the energy up a level with some much willing audience interaction during her take of Sugar Billy's “Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin' on Me)".
Armed with a crack band and a trio of cherub-voiced backing singers, Stone continued in cover song territory with another Chi-Lites number, “Stoned Out of My Mind” and s sensual rendition of the 1988 dance floor hit, “Teardrops,” by Womack & Womack.
Her take on Eddie Floyds’s”Knock on Wood” was augmented by Ty Taylor, (the singer for the band Vintage Touble, who opened the show with a stellar set of rock and soul that would have made Otis Redding and the Bar Kays proud), and the duet provided the most celestial moment of the night.
The soul music scene in the US is sadly a shell of what it was in its 60’s and 70’s heyday, makings Stone performance all that more of a rare treat for the fortunate Boston crowd.
