Musicalize once again took over the Indigo2 to bring us another one of their eagerly awaited shows and this time it was headlined by none other than R&B superstar Brandy! That's right, September 24th marked the date that Brandy performed her first show in the UK for over 4 years, and needless to say, she was most definitely missed!
Opening the show, as the audience excitedly took to their seats, was Dora Martin, Ayah Marar, Rachel Kerr and Mike Hough. If you dared take your eyes off Brandy for a millisecond, you may have spotted a few celebs in the audience, including MKS, Rochelle Humes, JB of JLS and Emeli Sande.
Once the support acts had done their thing on stage, Brandy then appeared on stage to a standing ovation (and nobody sat back down again throughout the entire show) whilst singing the classic track, 'What About Us?'
Brandy sure knows how to put on a show-stopping performance as she hit every note perfectly whilst getting down with her hot female dancers. Performing hit after hit, she then went on to sing a Whitney tribute and sang a few songs dedicated to her idol including, 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'.
An especially beautiful moment during the show, was when the audience's continuous screams and applause made Brandy take a step back and stop performing whilst looking out into the audience with her hands in her face and tears streaming down her face.
Continuing the show pulling out classics including 'Afrodisiac' and more recent tracks such as 'Put It Down' and 'Wildest Dreams'. Old or new, it was evident that Brandy has one of the strongest back catalogues of music… possibly ever!
At the end of the show, Brandy let her dancers showcase their talent before the star herself strutted to the front and showed us a few moves of her own, simply saying, 'I don't twerk, I keep it classy!'
Coming back to the stage for an encore, Brandy performed one of her biggest tracks of all time, 'The Boy Is Mine'. A truly amazing show put on by Musicalize and Brandy… definitely not one that will be forgotten any time soon!
Music News' Tasha Demetriou caught up with the US superstar a couple of days before her performance at Musicalize, and this is what she had to say...
Brandy, lovely to meet you! How are you?(English accent) I'm alright, I'm alright. (Laughs).
How long have you been practising your accent? It sounds good! They only taught me today so I haven't had a chance to practice much yet otherwise it would sound so much better. Once I have my second or third lesson it'll be more natural!
You've put out a lot of amazing music over the years and each time you seem to reinvent your sound and yourself. Who were your influences and what is it that influences you to be able to reinvent yourself? It was only ever Whitney Houston. She was everything to me! But I'd say it definitely starts with life because you want it to be true to you are at that particular moment in time. Music represents a certain time and period in your life. I never like to stay the same, I don't like to sing a song that I've already sang before so I love to try different things. I love working with different producers and finding a formula that works for that particular time in my life. It has worked for me and of course there have been albums that have been more successful than others. This last album 'Two Eleven', I really appreciate the process and the work that was put into this album because it sounded different and sounded old at the same time. That is a challenge, but... I'm up for it!
On to something very exciting! Your collaboration with Jessie J… tell me about that?!Yes! Finally someone's asked me about that! Nobody has asked me about the Jessie J situation! Well I met Jessie J when she was in LA and we were preparing to do a song together, a Diana Ross tribute and Whitney passed so I didn't end up performing that night because I was too shook up. But I met her before that happened and she was very kind and we were practicing and this chick's voice is just UN-real! It's unreal at just how great she can sing and I've always loved her music, my daughter actually introduced me to Jessie J and she just floored me! She said that she's always had a special love for me and my voice. Knowing that my work is appreciated is amazing and I'm so blessed to be appreciated!
So she asked me to be a part of her 'Alive' project and Claude Kelly had a great song, 'Conquer the World'. I loved it! I loved the meaning of it, and the melody of it and I was like yes! And thennn, when she gave me the second verse as well I was like (waves arms in the air and looks up), yes!
I would have loved to take a trip over here to record the song with her and I'm sure that would have been a great story to tell but unfortunately that didn't happen. But the great thing is that the song is on the album and she is such a great talent who has one of the best voices of this generation!
We absolutely love the track! Brandy, any last messages you want to add?Just that music is my life and I'm gonna continue. I'm constantly recording and I really can't wait to get in the groove of the next project… it's gonna be great!
