Brandy and Monica say they “fell into the [industry] traps” of not liking each other for the sake of their hit track.

The two singers had a hit with 1998 duet The Boy Is Mine and are set to reunite for another collaboration, It All Belongs to Me.

Brandy and Monica appeared on radio show Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club and rubbished rumours that there is still animosity between them.

“We didn’t know each other [when we recorded The Boy Is Mine] and what happened was, they do the same thing that they do with the rappers or females, they kind of create it first, and we were young enough to fall into the traps. So we didn’t like each other, we didn’t communicate, we didn’t perform the record outside of the one time on MTV Awards. We never even wanted to be in each other’s presence for many years.

“They pit you against each other,” Brandy continued, before Monica added: “At 16 and 17 that’s one thing, but at these ages it’s unacceptable. There’s too much to be done, and we can do more together than separately. We don’t feed into that now.”

The twosome also laughed about Monica’s outspoken personality. The songstress defended her opinionated character, and says it’s refreshing to be an honest person around such “fake” industry types nowadays.

“Monica has got a bit of hood in there, but she switches it up, she’s versatile,” Brandy told the radio station, before Monica chimed: “Hang on a minute, I like to call it ‘real’. People don’t respect it real anymore, everybody is so busy with their facades, you can’t get through to who people are.

“If hood is in your mind what you think of when you think of real, I’ll accept that. I’ll be anything but fake.”
