The 1939 Judy Garland song ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead’ has made it to the top of the UK iTunes chart following the death of Margaret Thatcher.
Thatcher, nicknamed The Iron Lady by the Russians, divided the UK under her rule as Prime Minister from 1979-1990. On the announcement of Maggie’s death the shot shot to number two and now has topped the chart.
It would appear the Brits have long memories and upon news breaking of her death this week the classic ‘Wizard of Oz’ song ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead’ first recorded by Judy Garland 74 years ago in 1939 has gone to number one on the British iTunes singles chart.
According to the Official Charts Company, that will give the song an overall number 10 spot when the British chart is compiled across all retailers
“As of midnight last night (Tuesday, April 9) Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead, credited to the Wizard Of Oz Film Cast, has sold over 10,600 copies, which is roughly 5,000 copies away from a Top 3 placing at this mid-way stage”.
Officialcharts.com also states that, “After less than 12 hours of the news of Baroness Thatcher’s death breaking, a version of the track credited to Judy Garland (who played Dorothy Gale in The Wizard Of Oz) appeared in the preliminary Official Singles sales flash at Number 54, while a 1961 cover version by Ella Fitzgerald climbed to 146”.
