American Idol has confirmed its new-season judges.

Jennifer Lopez is making a return to the hot seat, along with Keith Urban and new addition Harry Connick, Jr., who replaces Randy Jackson.

Show veteran Randy will also be back, but in the role of in-house mentor, taking over from Jimmy Iovine.

Harry is no stranger to American Idol, having previously acted as a mentor on the programme.

“I have always been a huge fan of American Idol and really enjoyed my time as a mentor on the show," he gushed in a statement.

"And I am honoured that they’ve asked me to be a judge this season. As an entertainer, I am truly excited to bring my perspective to American Idol, and to help emerging performers find their way.”

Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly added that the judges brought "impressive talent" to the show.

He praised each member of the panel individually, saying diva Jennifer was "loved" by audiences, that Harry is a "genius" and that Keith is a "positive force".

The country music star also believes the 13th season's shake up is for the best.

“I think this season of Idol is gonna be a blast,” said Keith. “New team, new energy, and a whole new field of artists to be discovered and given a chance!”

Fans of the show won't be surprised to hear the news that Jennifer, 44, is returning.

Her dancer beau, Casper Smart, recently let the cat out of the bag by saying the singer-and-actress will serve as a judge this season.

In the most recent issue of US Cosmopolitan, Jennifer opens up about what she looks for when it comes to love.

"I have my own high standards for what I want in a partner and how I want to be treated," she explained.

"I bring a lot to the table. I'm not talking about material things but what I have to offer as a person – love and loyalty and all the things that make a good relationship."

The new season of American Idol will premiere in the US on January 15 2014.
