Jay Z is reportedly wearing a Five Percent Nation medallion to represent his family.

The 44-year-old rapper sparked controversy at a basketball game recently when he was spotted wearing the piece representing the religious group. Five Percent Nation has caused controversy in the past, with allegations some of its teachings are racist.

Saladin Allah, a member of the group, has spoken out about his views on Jay Z's choice of accessory. He believes the musician is simply sharing how happy and proud he is of his wife Beyoncé Knowles and their daughter Blue Ivy.

"The piece that Jay has been wearing represents the sun, known as the great power in the universe. It has a seven [considered to be a divine number], a moon and a star, symbolising the man, woman and the child," he explained to British magazine Look.

"So, that piece on his chain represents the family as a great source of power. And that's him Beyoncé and the baby. If you notice, he didn't start wearing it until after they'd had Blue. He's probably just wearing it to say he's proud of his family."

Many people have hit out at Jay Z's decision to wear the neckpiece. He previously hinted that he knew its connotations when asked what it means, but Saladin doesn't think the star would wear it for the sake of it.

"Jay Z is not an active member - no one has vouched for him. [But] it was always understood that you don't wear the regalia if you don't totally subscribe to the life," he added.
