The Pixies announced on Friday that bassist and occasional vocalist Kim Deal has left the band.

The statement was issued by band members Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering:

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

There is no word from Deal on the reason that she quit; however, her other band, the Breeders, have been very busy over the last year.

The Pixies were formed in 1986 by Santiago and Francis with Deal joining after seeing a classified ad for a bass player, an instrument that she had never played before. She was a headstrong member of the band who constantly pushed to have her songs featured and to sing, something that brought numerous disagreements with Francis. When the band took a break after the tour for their 1988 album Doolittle, she went out and started the Breeders as a side project. The band eventually broke up from 1993 to 2004, coming back together for reunion shows that led to regular dates over the next seven years. They have not toured since 2011.
