A choir of NHS workers from the high profile Lewisham Hospital is today (Monday 9 November) releasing a charity single which bookmakers have made one of favourites for Christmas number 1.
The choir will be performing "A Bridge Over You" at 1.45pm outside Lewisham Hospital's A&E - which earlier in the year was saved from closure by a massive community campaign arguing that services at the high performing Lewisham Hospital should not be closed because of problems elsewhere in the NHS.
The people of Lewisham have taken on the government twice in the courts and won and now they're taking on the charts!
A unique arrangement of "Fix You" by Coldplay and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel, "A Bridge Over You" has received support from thousands on Twitter and Facebook, including double Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes, Hollywood actor Michael Sheen and comedian Eddie Izzard. Any net profits made from the sale of the single will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and local healthcare charities.
Chidi Ejimofo, choir member and A&E consultant said: “We do this job because we love it and are committed to looking after our patients. We think this song sums up that sentiment and is a way of celebrating the thousands of dedicated NHS staff across the country. The support has been overwhelming so far and we are touched that the song and the video have moved so many people to tears. We want as many sales as possible because the more we sell the more money we raise for charities, and if we get to No. 1 it will be an added bonus!”

The choir were first seen a year ago on Gareth Malone’s BBC series Sing While You Work.
