Pharrell Williams sees Miley Cyrus as "a threat".

The 20-year-old singer caused shockwaves with her raunchy performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which saw her gyrate on Robin Thicke and do some saucy twerking.

While some expressed outrage at the display, Pharrell thinks Miley's scantily-clad dancing is a force to be reckoned with.

"The world has no idea who she really is; they've gotten just a slice," the rapper warned MTV News.

"It's interesting, because while everyone thinks they know who she is and what she's all about now, and they're like, 'Oh, we got it. We saw that performance, we know,' You have no idea.

"I'll say this: I'll remind you she's from Nashville, her dad is Billy Ray Cyrus and her godmother is Dolly Parton. All I'm saying is: get ready. That girl's a threat."

Growing up in the public eye as star of Disney show Hannah Montana is likely to have had an effect on the star. Her father has previously admitted regretting allowing her to be involved with the programme as it forced her to mature too fast.

"If you think about it, when you were 20 years old and you threw caution to the wind, you did so. Your friends were around, your family was around, strangers were around but it was in the confines of your own privacy, she's done so in public," Pharrell sympathised.

Miley defended her own performance this week, claiming she and Robin "made history" on stage.
