Prince "got really upset" when he thought Glastonbury organisers had leaked the news he was playing.
The US star is famed for being secretive and doesn't do a lot of press. The organiser of the annual UK music festival has confirmed he did want to line up Prince for this year's event, but it didn't go to plan.
"We wanted him to play, and it got to the point where his people were talking to us about him doing it, but before he confirmed he got really upset because he thought we had advertised that he was playing. We hadn't, but with social media, rumours get everywhere, and one of those rumours was that Prince was coming. So he didn't want to do it in the end," Michael Eavis told British newspaper The Guardian.
Although Michael understands that music fans are always excited to hear who will make the festival's eclectic bill, he warned that starting rumours doesn't benefit anyone. Speculation on social media can make it look like those behind Glastonbury have been leaking secrets, which they would never do.
Michael also believes people attend the festival for the feel of it, rather than because of who's made the line-up. Those appearing this year include Metallica, Arcade Fire, Lily Allen, Jack White, Robert Plant, Dolly Parton and Ed Sheeran.
Kelis is also taking to the stage and asked one of the questions in the interview, which featured queries from many stars. The US singer's latest record is called Food and unsurprisingly she wanted to hear about Michael's culinary favourites. He explained that the meals on offer at the event are of great importance to him, which is why he's cut out a lot of fast food stalls.
"We're much more selective than we used to be, when we had more fast food. Now we're getting quite snobby about it, and we try to have hand-made food stalls, with as little fast food as possible," he said. "It's interesting that people don't drink vast amounts of alcohol here, you know. I think it's the atmosphere – if people get drunk they can't appreciate it."
